In SVUDL programs, our students build essential skills and then learn practical ways to put them in use in every area of their lives. In other words, they begin seeing the results of their efforts — and accomplishing more — right away. Students rise to the challenge of researching, analyzing, and solving complex problems. They become more disciplined in their work habits, and this leads to better grades and a higher likelihood that they'll stay in school. They not only graduate from high school, but are much more likely to continue on to become college graduates as well. Plus, SVUDL students have a higher chance of winning scholarships and landing internships.
SVUDL students grow as communicators who can captivate and persuade audiences of peers and colleagues. Strong collaboration abilities make them excellent team members, and practiced decision-making and critical thinking skills prepare them to be a natural choice for leadership roles. Students become agents of change, thoughtfully considering the issues facing their communities, taking on the responsibility to speak out, and becoming people who bravely stand up for what's right.
SVUDL creates dynamic spaces for students to learn how to exercise their voices in three ways:
1. We work with students every day in afterschool clubs that offer opportunities to learn and practice Speech and Debate.
2. We have created two A-G approved Curricula that can be taught as electives in schools.
3. We work with teachers to incorporate Speech and Debate techniques into their everyday teaching called Debate Centered Instruction (DCI).
