We are thrilled to invite you to The SVUDL Moot Court 2024 Showcase, an exciting and educational event where high school students prepare and argue a case before a distinguished panel of judges, including:
Hon. Michelle T. Friedland, Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit
Hon. Cynthia C. Lie, Associate Justice, California Sixth District Court of Appeal
Hon. Charles E. Wilson, Associate Justice, California Sixth District Court of Appeal
Their arguments will be made in front of this esteemed panel and interrogated by them, as they evaluate the students on the quality and persuasiveness of their presentation, as well as their unscripted responses to spontaneous questions from the bench.
The Moot Court serves as a cornerstone activity of SVUDL's Professional Access & Mentoring programs, which aim to bridge the opportunity gap and enhance the diversity pipeline of future professionals. By engaging students in activities that broaden their horizons, opportunities, and networks, we empower them to unlock their full potential.
This year's case centers around the pretrial motion of Casey Davidson, a young adult residing in the fictitious town of Acorn, California. Davidson faces a felony charge of first degree murder in the case of People v. Davidson. The question raised in this pretrial motion is whether or not it is a permissible search under the Fourth Amendment for the government to obtain routinely collected GPS location data from a third-party GPS provider. How the court rules will have a direct bearing on the admissibility of crucial evidence and the outcome of the trial.
Over the course of several weeks, students have dedicated themselves to intensive preparation through regular practice sessions with their coaches. Additionally, they have had the valuable opportunity to receive guidance from practicing attorneys, aiding them in refining their speeches for the final proceedings. These esteemed judges will assess the students based on the caliber and persuasiveness of their scripted presentation, along with their ability to provide spontaneous unscripted responses to inquiries from the bench.
